How to Open a File in Terminal or Command Prompt (Windows, MacOS, & Unix)

Image
In the realm of computing, the command-line interface (commonly referred to as the terminal) provides a versatile and powerful means of file manipulation. Mastering the use of your terminal is an invaluable skill. In this tutorial, I will show you how to open various types of files using the terminal across a variety of operating systems. Why Use Terminal While your GUI is intuitive and user-friendly, the terminal is indispensable for a range of tasks that require precision, automation, and batch processing (my favorite.) Utilizing the terminal enables you to write scripts to automate repetitive tasks or execute operations on multiple files simultaneously. Before we delve into specific commands, you'll need to identify where the terminal application can be accessed on your operating system. Windows: Use PowerShell or Command Prompt. MacOS: Your Terminal can be found in the Utilities folder within the Applications directory. Linux: Your terminal can usually be opened using the Ctr...

Facebook Ads Still Pending Review? Here's the Scoop!

Image
Why Is My Facebook Ad Pending Review? After creating an advertisement through Facebook, you may notice that it doesn't go live right away. In fact, it seems to be "pending" for quite a while. When I created my first Facebook ad, I found it a little frustrating to have to wait so long. I mean, I'm giving them my money, right? I learned that there are some fairly compelling reasons why new ads sit in the pending pile. The biggest reason: Facebook manually reviews every single new ad campaign. With a large number of advertisers flocking to Facebook, your ad can sit in the queue for a while. How Long Will the Review Process Take? According to Facebook, if you create your ad during their business hours, it can take up to 12 hours for your ad to be reviewed. Once you've created your ad, it will be queued. So even if you create your ad during business hours, the reviewers still have to get through all the ads before yours. So what if you've scheduled your ad to ...

Pandas: Delete rows where column value is null

Data preprocessing is a crucial part of data analysis. There are different methods for handling missing data. Doing so effectively will determine the accuracy of your model. I enjoy using the sklearn-pandas library when possible, as DataFrameMapper seemingly bridges the gap between scikit-learn's abilities and pandas data structures. Here, we will use this to avoid data imputation on a particular column and instead remove rows with missing values in this column from the dataset. Do note that whether one should remove data versus the decision to substitute values should be decided on a case-by-case basis. The factors involving this decision are beyond the scope of this tutorial. Deleting rows where column[xxx] value is null I received the following question regarding working on a dataset in pandas: "Hello, I'm using the sklearn-pandas.DataFrameMapper to preprocess my data. I prefer not to impute values for a particular column. Instead, I want to exclude any rows where ...

Find Where Your Content Is Being Shared on Social Media

Image
One of my favorite things to do is check out who’s been sharing my stuff on social media (it’s a nice boost to the ole ego.) And hey, it’s a great way to find new places to strategically share your content or give the share a boost. I use the following bagful of tricks to find the presence of my blog posts and articles on social media. How to Find Your Content Reposted on Pinterest Pinterest is the easiest social media network to work with in terms of finding whether your stuff has been shared. To find out what stuff from your blog has been shared on Pinterest, put http://www.pinterest.com/source/ in your address bar, followed by your blog’s URL (without the HTTP and WWW stuff.) For example, my URL is melbel.hubpages.com. To see which of my articles people have shared on Pinterest, I go to http://www.pinterest.com/source/melbel.hubpages.com/ and voilĂ ! How to Track Retweets on X/Twitter X is slightly more painful than Pinterest. If you have a badge on each of your blog posts, like ...

How to Remove MyWebSearch (Uninstall Guide)

Image
If you have MyWebSearch Toolbar, MySearchDial, or My Way Speedbar (it's the same software) installed, chances are you've tried to remove it only to realize that it didn't fully uninstall. MyWebSearch is a pesky software that takes several steps to remove. You may have initially been interested in the software because it came with free things such as emoticons and smileys. However, if you've made it to this article, you already know that you just need it to be completely removed from your computer. This is likely because it slows down your computer, installs tracking cookies, and your anti-malware software considers it to be spyware. The Vundo Trojan horse virus is also related to MyWebSearch. Many computer users with the MyWebSearch Toolbar installed have also found their systems to be infected with the Vundo Trojan. Uninstalling MyWebSearch First, you'll want to remove the program using "Add or Remove Programs." If you have already done so, skip ahea...

How to Burn an ISO in Windows, Step-by-Step Instructions

Image
There may be a time when you'll need to burn an ISO image to a CD or DVD. For example, using a disk with an ISO image is arguably the easiest way to put a new operating system on a computer. You can also mount an operating system ISO image as a virtual disk. This way, you can browse and play around in a new operating system without actually having to install it. Burning an ISO is really easy! Once you learn how to do it, you'll probably never forget how it's done. Before getting started, you'll need a few things: The .iso file you would like to burn (for this tutorial, I will be using an ISO of Linux Mint.) Make sure you know where your .iso is saved. A blank CD or DVD A CD/DVD burner CD/DVD burning software Insert the CD into Your CD Burner Yep! Just put the CD into your CD/DVD drive (or your CD burner if you have an external burner.) If a window pops up (as it does for me, I use XP) asking "What do you want Windows to do?" just hit "Cancel." CD ...

How to Install VirtualBox in Windows 10

Image
What Is VirtualBox? VirtualBox is virtual machine software that allows you to be able to use an operating system, such as Ubuntu, within another operating system, such as Windows 7. While there are other ways to use multiple operating systems on the same computer, such as dual-booting (where you select the operating system to be used while starting the computer), using virtual machine software is perhaps the most popular method. One of the reasons VirtualBox is one of the most popular ways to use multiple operating systems on one computer is that it is both Free and free. This means it is free of cost and is open-source software. Another thing that makes using software like VirtualBox a popular choice over dual-booting is that you can use multiple operating systems at the same time. For example, if you were playing a video game in Windows and came up with a great addition to some code you're writing in Ubuntu, all you would have to do is open VirtualBox, boot into your Ubuntu vi...
